48 × 24 oil on canvas
Ophelia Deciding reimagines the familiar story of Ophelia through the lens of agency and transformation. Immersed in water beside a pale python, she is no longer a figure carried helplessly toward an ending shaped by others. Here, Ophelia is given back the power to choose.
At the heart of the painting is the recognition that we are not powerless within our own stories. The capacity to rise into a larger, more fully realized version of ourselves may already exist within us, sometimes in the very places we have learned to distrust.
The python embodies the wild and formidable parts of the self we are often taught to fear or suppress. What appears dangerous is not necessarily an enemy. When acknowledged rather than rejected, that instinctive and awe-inspiring part of ourselves can become an ally, carrying within it the very strength required for transformation.
In Ophelia Deciding, becoming does not require abandoning the darker or less easily contained parts of ourselves. It asks us to recognize their power, integrate them, and discover what becomes possible when we move forward with the whole of who we are.
